AWS re:Invent 2021 is the annual Amazon Web Services (AWS) user conference that focuses on cloud strategy and operations, security and developer productivity, and IT architecture and infrastructure.

Announced on November 30, 2021 as the newest generation of its ARM-based Graviton processors: AWS Graviton 3.

The new chip will be 25% faster than the current generation chips, with floating-point and cryptographic operations processing 2x faster, it includes support for bfloat16 data, and will be able to deliver up to 3x better performance.

They will power the new EC2 c7g instances. These new instances will also be the first to use DDR5 memory, one of the reasons why the new instances will use less energy. This new memory option will provide 50 percent higher bandwidth than the DDR4 memory in the last generation of Graviton 2 chips.

AWS also reported that Graviton 3 uses 60% less energy to reach the same level of performance compared to comparable EC2 instances.

As Jeff Barr from AWS noted, these new chips and instances should be quite useful for a wide variety of workloads, including compute-intensive “HPC, batch processing, electronic design automation (EDA), media encoding, scientific modeling, ad serving, distributed analytics, and CPU-based machine learning inference.”
