Managed cloud vs in-house team: how to decide who takes care of your AWS infrastructure?

Every company that grows on AWS reaches a decision point: keep the infrastructure under the exclusive responsibility of the internal IT team, or hire a specialized managed cloud service. There is no right answer for every company, but there are objective criteria that help make this decision with more confidence.

What does it mean to have an in-house team taking care of the infrastructure?

In this model, the company’s own IT team is responsible for provisioning resources, monitoring the health of the environment, responding to incidents, applying security updates, and optimizing costs on AWS. It works well when the team has technical depth in cloud, available time for these activities, and an environment that does not change in complexity too quickly.

The risk appears when the infrastructure grows faster than the team’s capacity to keep up, or when the most experienced cloud professionals end up overloaded with operational tasks and without time to evolve the architecture.

What does it mean to hire managed cloud?

Managed cloud is when a specialized company takes on the operational responsibility for the AWS infrastructure, including continuous monitoring, incident response, application of security patches, cost optimization, and specialized technical support, with a service level defined in a contract.

This does not mean the company loses control over the environment. It means that recurring operational tasks no longer depend exclusively on the availability of the internal team, which starts focusing on strategic decisions instead of operational routine.

Signs that it makes sense to keep everything in-house

Companies with a mature AWS IT team, with the capacity to respond to incidents outside business hours, and with a relatively stable environment in terms of growth and complexity, usually manage to keep the operation in-house without major risks.

Signs that it makes sense to hire managed cloud

When the internal team is small relative to the size of the environment, when there is no on-call coverage outside business hours, when incidents take a long time to be identified and resolved, or when the most technical professionals spend more time on operational tasks than evolving the architecture, managed cloud tends to resolve these bottlenecks quickly.

It also makes sense for companies in a phase of accelerated growth, when the complexity of the environment increases faster than the capacity to hire and train the internal team.

The two models are not mutually exclusive

Many companies combine the two: they keep an internal team responsible for product and architecture decisions, while outsourcing the continuous operation of the infrastructure to a specialized team. This hybrid model usually reduces hiring costs, guarantees twenty-four-hour-a-day coverage, and still keeps the strategic business knowledge inside the company.

How to evaluate the real cost of each option?

Keeping everything in-house seems cheaper at first glance, but the real cost includes hiring, continuous training in an area that evolves quickly, on-call coverage, and the financial risk of poorly managed incidents. Managed cloud has a predictable recurring cost, but eliminates a good part of these hidden risks.
