Signs that your company needs an AWS architect before scaling

Many companies only look for an AWS architect after something has already gone wrong: a bill that tripled without explanation, a security incident, an application that could not handle the access peak. The ideal is to identify the signs before that, especially when the company is about to grow and the base built so far may not withstand the next leap.

Does the AWS bill grow faster than the operation?

If cloud cost goes up every month without a clear business explanation behind it, it is a sign that there are poorly sized resources, idle instances, or an architecture that has never been reviewed since it was created. This is one of the most common signs, and also one of the easiest to correct with an adequate technical assessment.

Do incidents repeat without a clear root cause?

When the same type of problem happens again, even after being resolved, there is usually a structural flaw in the architecture that has never been addressed. Correcting the symptom repeatedly, without reviewing the cause, is a pattern that only a specialized technical eye can break.

Is the internal team overloaded firefighting?

If the IT team spends more time solving urgent problems than evolving the architecture, the company is in reactive mode. This usually means that important infrastructure decisions are being postponed, and that risk will continue to accumulate until the next incident.

The company plans to grow, but the architecture was not designed for it

A system that works well for the current volume of users may not withstand sudden growth, whether from a marketing campaign, a market expansion, or strong seasonality. If no one has recently reviewed whether the architecture scales automatically and without bottlenecks, this is a real risk for any growth plan.

Is there a lack of clarity about the environment’s security and governance?

If no one in the company can confidently answer who has access to what in the AWS account, how the data is protected, or what would happen in the event of a security incident, there is a governance gap that needs to be corrected before it becomes a real problem.

There is no tested disaster recovery plan

Companies that have never simulated a major failure usually do not know how long they would take to come back online after a serious incident. This kind of gap only appears at the worst possible moment, when it is already too late to correct.

Architecture decisions are made without specialized technical support

If important choices, such as which database to use, how to structure the network, or how to distribute the load across regions, are made without an in-depth technical assessment, the company is building technical debt that will cost more to correct later.

What to do when you identify these signs?

Recognizing these signs is the first step. The second is to seek a technical assessment of the current environment, usually through an architecture review, to identify concrete risks and prioritize corrections before they become incidents.
